Abstract
Twenty-nine patients wth atopic dermatitis were openly treated with gamma-linolenic acid for 12 weeks. The clinical response to treatment was evaluated at each visit and at the end of the trial. The overall average improvements with gamma-linolenic acid in percentage terms were in the 69.0% range. Gamma-linolenic acid has been found to be effective in resolving the symptoms of atopic dermatitis especially in relieving itch. Ig E. production decreased in approximately 30% of our patients who showed clinical improvement, but it did not decrease in 70% of our patients. No side-effects due to gamma-linolenic acid were observed. Efficacy, tolerance, and overall evaluation assessed better than good were 68.9%, 96.5%, and 68.9% by the physician and the patient. in conclusion, in an open, uncontrolled trial, good results were obtained by using gamma-linolenic acid in the treatment of atopic dermatitis. Gamma-linolenic acid is useful in the management of atopic dermatitis.
